Nutrition information + Bradley Method® natural childbirth classes offered in Arizona: Chandler, Tempe, Ahwatukee, Gilbert, Mesa, Scottsdale, Payson

I got to sample CredibleCravings at the Club MomMe event I attended in June 2014.  I wish these had been around when I was growing Sweet Peas - green, clean *and* yummy!!

While we try to eat whole food as much as possible, life happens! When you need a snack on the run, these may be just the thing you are looking for.  These are great for the diaper bag, and for hungry siblings who are always looking for a snack!

Here are some of the things that Stephanie Baker, Founder of CredibleCravings, shared with me so that I could offer some information about her delicious products to our students and readers:

CredibleCravings is the first certified organic whole food bar developed to support the nutritional needs of women before, during and after pregnancy. At CredibleCravings, we believe that proper perinatal nutrition is foundational to lifelong health.  Each and every ingredient in our line of bars was selected for a specific nutritional benefit during the perinatal period, providing moms and moms-to-be with perfect sustenance through wholesome ingredients in a convenient package:

  • Certified Organic; Certified Gluten-Free; Non-GMO; Kosher; Soy-Free
  • No fillers, artificial preservatives or sweeteners
  • 1 billion probiotics to support digestive health and immune function
  • Healthy omega-3 and monounsaturated fats to support cardiovascular health, sustained energy levels, and cognitive and visual development of baby
  • High in fiber to support digestive health and satisfy hunger

Credible Cravings bars are available in three delicious flavors:

What was the inspiration behind the flavor profiles for CredibleCravings?
A: Each Ingredient. On purpose. That’s the CredibleCravings way. All three flavors—Lemon Ginger Greens, Cacao and Cranberry Oatmeal—contain ingredients that were intentionally selected with the health of mom and baby in mindHere is a breakdown of each flavor. We hope you enjoy!
  • Lemon Ginger Greens—In addition to helping ease morning sickness, lemons are full of vitamins and minerals, and are a particularly excellent source of vitamin C. Ginger has long been held as the go-to ingredient for alleviating nausea and upset stomach caused by morning sickness. Spinach is loaded with important nutrients including vitamin A, C, and K as well as folate. Kale is one of the healthiest vegetables on the planet. Kale is chock-full of vitamins that are essential to the health of both mom and baby. Per calorie, Kale has more iron than beef, more calcium than milk, and more Vitamin C than spinach. Kale is also high in protective antioxidants and folate to help reduce risk of neural tube defects.
  • CacaoCacao is a natural source of antioxidants and contains important B vitamins and minerals such as calcium, zinc and iron. Not to mention that it is one of the most craved flavors in the world!
  • Cranberry OatmealOats are an excellent pregnancy food. They are full of fiber to help regulate digestion, B vitamins, iron, and potassium. Pregnancy brings about a number of changes in mom, including an increases risk for urinary tract infections (UTIs). Cranberries have long been held as the go-to ingredient for naturally reducing the occurrence UTIs. Additionally, cranberries are a good source of vitamin C and offer a deliciously refreshing, tart flavor!

What drove you?
I founded CredibleCravings on a desire to improve the health of our next generation by inspiring proper nutrition during the time it matters most – before, during and after pregnancy.
Why the perinatal period?  Quite simply, because there is no other time period where proper nutrition has such a significant impact on our lifelong health. Every body system in the fetus develops under the nutritional environment provided by mom, and how fetal organs develop impacts the health of baby for life.  Yes, women have cravings during this time period; but it’s the worst time to be introducing junk food to the body.  We developed a bar to satisfy cravings, while also supporting mom’s health and the healthy development of her baby.
Why now?  With so many options and so many products on shelves today, honest healthy snacks are hard to find and more important than ever.  For women who keep busy schedules with multiple social and work obligations, the modern world of synthetic convenience foods can beset even the purest of nutritious intentions.  CredibleCravings is about making the nutritious choice an effortless choice for moms and moms-to-be.

How did you design your product?
Our team was determined to develop a bar especially for the perinatal period with integrity: clean, purposeful, and comprised of the highest quality ingredients.  We started by ensuring every single ingredient that went into our bars had a purpose.  We were unwavering in our mission.  We leveraged diverse ingredients.  We included the best probiotics. We kept all artificial sweeteners, preservatives and fillers out.  We like to think of our wholesome snacks as nature’s gift to Mom, and Mom’s gift to her growing little one!

Partner Profile:
CredibleCravings was founded on one intention: To promote mindful nourishment before, during and after pregnancy.

The best nutrition is pure and simple…but in modern society, it’s not easy.  It’s not easy to put first: amidst the hectic juggling of work, family and social obligations.  It’s not easy to understand: adrift aisles of synthetic convenience foods and confusing health claims.  It’s not easy to promote: in a society that normalizes unhealthy and unmindful eating.
However, proper nutrition is the most critical element of lifelong health and directly influences your energy, your vitality, and your physical well-being.  Our hope is that every person would personally experience the benefits of a properly nourished body and to know the beauty, the vitality, and the prosperity that permeates every aspect of a nutrition-centered life.

CredibleCravings, the first truly nutrition-centered bar focuses on nutritional needs at the time it matters most: the beginning. A mother’s nutritional status during the perinatal period has a significant impact not only on her own health, but leaves lifelong footprints on the health of her child: through both nature and nurture.

Through collaboration with nutritionists, midwives, and obstetricians, CredibleCravings identified the essential vitamin and mineral needs and ideal energy sources for the perinatal period then went to the field to find natural, fresh ingredients to meet those needs.  The intent is that consumers not only feel asssured that they are supporting their very vital nutrient needs every time they open a CredibleCravings wrapper; but also that they know exactly what is in the bar and why it is in there.

What is your favorite on-the-go snack?

The Birth-Day...Then Parenting!

Posted on January 6, 2015 at 1:05 AM Comments comments (0)
We are four weeks into our winter series - it is so exciting to be getting to know eight amazing couples in person...and this series, we have the pleasure of welcoming back on of our Spring 2013 couples as they prepare for Baby #2...from Canada!! The internet and web-chat rock!!

Today's post was inspired by a question that was asked right before we dismissed class on Friday night.  One of our students asked, "Is there a list of questions that can help us prepare to be parents?"
Bruss and I often quip that we could teach another set of classes after the Birth-Day.  What we teach for childbirth preparation is valuable, and there is definitely more than enough to share over twelve weeks to prepare for a healthy pregnancy and the birth journey.

The fact remains that the Birth-Day is just the beginning of a lifelong journey as parents!!  We could definitely do another twelve-week course that focuses on parenting...

And that still would not be enough.

Parenting is something that evolves over time, and with each child that is welcomed to the family.  I took a look at the list of questions that we created when we got a similar request two years ago.  Now that we have been parents for 730 more days, we were able to add a second page to the list! As our children have grown, so have we. We have had many more negotiations about what we value as a family.  Bruss and I have had to discuss most of these questions already.  As we celebrate our first child's tenth birthday this month, we know we are on the brink of discovering yet another set of questions.  Page 3 will be written as we navigate life with a *gasp* tween!

Some thoughts on parenting before I share our list:

  • I believe that the healthy mother who carried the child probably knows more about that child before they are born than any book on earth.  Choices like breastfeeding, babywearing, co-sleeping; any or all of those add to the bond between parent and child.  It is a bond that helps us sense when something is off, or when something is going well - an invisible thread that keeps the family growing together.

  • We do tell parents that there several good books about parenting written by very well-respected pediatricians and researchers in the field of infant and child development.  Some of my personal favorites are those from the Dr. Sears library and Dr. Harvey Karp. Just as important as the books is the communication between you and your partner. Talk to each other and see what you come up with between the two of you after you have done some reading.

  • About all those "expert" opinions:  They are great for getting ideas or uncovering possible answers.  However, if something doesn't feel right or it is not working for you and your Sweet Pea, put down the book and read your child.  You and your partner have raised them - what does your gut tell you?

  • Be flexible - each child is a unique individual.  You need to be a parent to each child, and that may mean changing or growing as they present their needs.  We say our fourth is breaking us...everything that worked with her older siblings from birthing to toddlerhood has been re-learned, because she doesn't respond to the same things.  And that's okay!  Our core value of love and respect allows us to honor that need and still retain our integrity as parents and nurturers.

Anytime we have followed our instinct, it has been rewarded with a sigh of relief that we pulled on a thread and followed it until we had an answer or a solution that fit our family.  It is our hope and prayer that the same will be true for you.

So now for that list of questions...These are great conversation starters so you and your partner can try to find common ground.  Just as you would for a business, we believe it is important to set the core values for your family so that you can parent as a united front.

The first page was created with the intention of having these conversations during pregnancy or within the first year of establishing your family.

Bradley Method® natural childbirth classes offered in Arizona: Chandler, Tempe, Ahwatukee, Gilbert, Mesa, Scottsdale, Payson

The second page is to glance at now. Pull it out again when your child starts doing organized activities or making connections at preschool and/or elementary school.

The first five questions on our list are:

What are some pregnancy/birth/parenting decisions that you want to make, that you suspect your family/friends will not agree with?  How will you be a united front?

How is your relationship with your parents?  How do you want to incorporate your child into your family, and your partner’s family?

How did your parents handle conflict between them?  How do you think you want to handle it when it happens in front of your child(ren)?

Were you spanked as a child?  How do you feel about it?  What do you think you want to do with your child(ren)?*

Were you tickled as a child?  How do you feel about it?  What do you think you want to do with your child(ren)?*

Ready for more discussion?? Click HERE for the complete list.  There is no charge for the file - you are welcome to download it for your personal use.  Please be kind and link back to this post/ cite our webpage if you would like to share it.

Come visit us again next Tuesday, when we share ideas about managing the first few weeks after the birth-day with your newborn!!

What are ways you and your partner established the groundwork for your growing family?
Please leave us a comment - it will be moderated and posted.

*I absolutely do not believe in physical punishment/discipline, or any kind of physical contact with the child that violates them.  We believe that a child is whole human being from the day they are born, due full respect for their bodily integrity and physical, emotional and spiritual safety.

Inside Look: Mama Mio

Posted on July 2, 2014 at 6:34 AM Comments comments (0)
Continuing on with the treasure-trove of naturally-minded companies we had the opportunity to experience at the Club MomMe Spring Family Fest, here is an Inside Look at the Mama Mio skin care lines.   Mio co-founder Tanya Mackay Kazeminy ("MM") was kind enough to give us the inside scoop on their amazing company and products.

SPB: What is the motivation behind the Mama Mio Pregnancy and Postpartum skin care lines?
MM: Mama Mio was created out of our own selfish need. When we were pregnant, there wasn’t anything on the market that we actually wanted to use - skincare that actually worked, that wasn’t full of nasty chemicals, and products that made us feel good whilst using them. We knew from our own experiences that pregnancy is the first major skin challenge most women face. To grow and shrink your tummy by up to 30 inches in a 40-week period is not for the faint-hearted or the weak skinned. We wanted to create a line that that really understood the needs of pregnant women and new mamas, one that helped them achieve fit skin for life.

SPB: What are the products you would recommend for a mama during pregnancy?
MM: From all the women we’ve met on our Mama Mio journey, the number one concern we hear about is stretch marks. We are so proud of The Tummy Butter. Chock full of Omegas 3, 6 and 9, it works super hard to elasticize and protect growing tummies from stretch marks. Boob maintenance is also a top priority. Pregnant and new mama boobs can be tender and swollen. Pregnancy Boob Tube helps cool and soothe those boobs as well as strengthen and nourish the skin to protect them from future sagging. And for hormonal breakouts, our Gorgeous Glow balancing facial wash, or our new Swipes are just the thing to keep misbehaving skin in check.

SPB: What are the products you would recommend for a mama in the postpartum period?
MM: If you didn’t know about Mama Mio when you were pregnant, Goodbye Stretch Marks will help reduce the appearance and texture of stretch marks you may have developed. Megamama super-rich Omega body lotion is such a wonderful treat for tired, dry skin that has been give, give, giving in every way. During pregnancy, our own store of Omegas is so very depleted (your baby is using yours to make it’s own healthy brain and eyes), at a time when you need them most to keep skin strong. Megamama will help nourish and replenish new mama skin. For sore nipples, Keep Calm nipple balm is just genius. I use it for little scrapes, cuts and burns – it is so very soothing and healing.

SPB: Do you have a favorite item in your skin care line? Which one is it, and why?
MM: I have many favorites! Sometimes it depends on the season. Since it's summer, I am doubling up on Mio Double Buff dual action exfoliator, which gives me wickedly soft skin in seconds, followed by The Activist firming active body oil.  I love, love, love oils and we do them really well at Mio (if I do say so myself!). Living in London, summer is all about getting your legs out and these two products make me want to do just that.

SPB: Are there any risks for use during pregnancy or postpartum?
MM: At Mama Mio, we maintain a strict No Nasties policy. All of our products are safe to use throughout pregnancy and nursing. There are certain ingredients that should be avoided during pregnancy and postpartum. We do all of that research for you so none of these Nasties ever make it into our products.

SPB: What sets your skin care line apart from others on the market?
MM: At both Mio, our skincare range for active women, and Mama Mio, our pregnancy line, we go beyond skin deep to give practical tips and information about nutrition, exercise and life style to help women achieve fit skin for life. We are all about movement and energy, not just the cream in the jar. But about that cream - we take such pride in our formulations! We use the best, cleanest ingredients and their maximum levels, so our products really, really work. Aside from giving women fit skin, we want women to feel good in their skin, so we always speak with a positive voice.

Thank you, Tanya, for your time in answering these questions; and to Kelsey from the Mama Mio marketing team who organized this virtual interview.  We are thrilled to feature a honest company as an option for mamas.  You can work that glow from the first stages of pregnancy through the postpartum period - so much to love!

Options in Childbirth Class
Beautiful birth options is an interactive class for women, couples, partners and families who are peeking outside the more traditional birth process and desire to know what other options are available!
  • Did you have an experience with childbirth that maybe did not go the way you thought it would?
  • Have you ever wondered what it would be like to deliver your baby in the comfort of your own home?
  • Were you longing for more connection with your baby and/or your partner during the birth process?
In this class, we explore the beautiful possibilities available during pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum. We discuss your options for and the differences between the type of practitioners available to assist you with your birth (doctor, midwife, doula, etc) as well as options for delivery (hospital, birthing center, or home birth).

We will explore what YOU truly desire for your birth so that you can begin your journey in creating the birth process that is just right for YOU!

Birth News Update: April 10, 2014

Posted on April 10, 2014 at 8:57 PM Comments comments (44)

What a great week to get back into reading about all things pregnancy, birth and baby!  Lots of neat developments for families who are seeking fertility treatments, a possible breakthrough to treat pre-eclampsia, and another biological explanation about why those Sweet Peas just don't sleep through the night when they are newborns (another one in case you needed to remind yourself that your sleepless nights are just "for now" - they do eventually get really good at sleeping!!)

FERTILITY
Merck Serono agrees licensing deal for embryo viability test
Under the terms of the new deal, Merck Serono will obtain exclusive rights to commercialise the Eeva Test in Europe and Canada, with the option to extend the arrangement to additional selected countries and regions.

The product received European CE Mark approval in 2012 and is a non-invasive diagnostic test used adjunctively to traditional morphology. It utilises time-lapse imaging and computer software to analyse embryo development.

It provides reproductive endocrinologists and embryologists with objective information that can help to assess embryo development and viability, leading to better in vitro fertilisation patient outcomes.

Embryo screening gives couples hope for healthy pregnancy
An evolving technology called PGS, or preimplantation genetic screening, is responsible for their success, said Dr. Paul Miller, a reproductive endocrinologist and medical director of the Fertility Center of the Carolinas.

"We take an embryo that is five days old and remove six to 10 cells from what we know is going to be the placenta," he said, "and then test them for all sorts of genetic abnormalities and the right number of chromosomes."

But first comes in vitro fertilization. With IVF, eggs are retrieved and fertilized in a petri dish, allowed to develop for five days, and then implanted in the mother. Because of PGS, only the normal embryos are implanted.

"It helps us identify which ones are developing along the right track," said William Roudebush, associate laboratory director. "Everything we do here — the air quality, high-tech instrumention — is to optimize the pregnancy potential."

PREGNANCY
Aspirin may prevent preeclampsia in pregnant women
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force today published a draft of their recommended guidelines and final evidence summary on prescribing low-dose aspirin as a preventive measure against preeclampsia for pregnant women at high risk for the condition. The Task Force strongly recommends doctors prescribe a small dose -- 81 milligrams per day -- beginning after 12 weeks of pregnancy.

The Task Force, an independent, volunteer panel of health experts in prevention and evidence-based medicine that advises government health agencies on medical guidelines, found low-dose aspirin every day lowered the risk of preeclampsia in high-risk pregnant women by 24 percent.

In-womb surgery saves Navy couple's twins
“…the babies had a rare condition called Twin[to]Twin Transfusion Syndrome.  That's when one of the fetuses gives up most of its blood and nutrients to the other through shared blood vessels on the placenta.”

“TTTS affects about 15 percent of twins in the womb.”

POSTPARTUM
After birth: don’t ignore the risky postnatal symptoms
In the 24 hours after birth, 47% of British new mothers are not aware of the post-natal symptoms that could put at risk their own life or that of their child. Including fever, weakness, difficulty in urinating, dizziness, nausea, bleeding, rash, swelling and pain in the vulvar or perineal area in the first case. Or bad breathing, loss of appetite, lack of responsiveness, dark lips, body temperature above 38 °, yellowish color of the skin, swelling of the top of the head in the second. Moreover, two thirds of obstetricians are not aware of the standards on post-natal care developed by NICE.

Postpartum VTE Risk Highest Soon After Birth
A woman's risk for postpartum venous thromboembolism (VTE) is highest in the first few weeks after delivery and then drops steadily through week 12, a new study suggests. Pregnancy complications increase the risk for postpartum VTE.

The study is one of the few to track the incidence of postpartum VTE on a weekly basis, lead author Naomi K. Tepper, MD, MPH, from the Prevention and Health Promotion and the Division of Blood Disorders, National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Georgia, and colleagues write in the May issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

It is well established that the risk for VTE rises shortly after birth, largely because of pregnancy-related hypercoagulability. However, most previous studies report an aggregate risk for a given time, rather than week-by-week. Different components of the clotting system return to normal at different times, ranging from immediately after delivery to 6 to 12 weeks later, and little is known about how these changes affect VTE risk.

BABY
Hold your newborn like a kangaroo
A new Israeli study reveals that “kangaroo care” for premature babies has life-long effects on neurological and psychological development.
Conducted by Dr. Ruth Feldman – a professor in the department of psychology and in the Brain Research Center at Bar-Ilan University, and adjunct professor at the Child Study Center at Yale – the study shows that skin-to-skin contact between mother and newborn improves brain functioning later in life.

The concept of “kangaroo care” (named for the way that this marsupial carries her unformed offspring in her pouch) is not new. Introduced by neonatologist Edgar Rey Sanabria in 1978 in Bogota, Colombia — where access to incubators was limited — it is a method of using maternal body heat to prevent hypothermia in preemies.

Breastfeeding and infant sleep
In a new article published online today in the journal Evolution, Medicine, and Public Health, Professor David Haig argues that infants that wake frequently at night to breastfeed are delaying the resumption of the mother's ovulation and therefore preventing the birth of a sibling with whom they would have to compete.

It has already been documented that smaller gaps between the births of siblings are associated with increased mortality of infants and toddlers, especially in environments where resources are scarce and where infectious disease rates are high, and Professor Haig believes that the benefits of delay are such that the selective forces are strong enough to have engendered a significant evolutionary response.

Professor Haig says, "The duration of postpartum amenorrhea is a major determinant of interbirth internals (IBI) in natural fertility populations with more frequent and more intense nursing, especially at night, associated with prolonged infertility. Natural selection will have preserved suckling and sleeping behaviours of infants that suppress ovarian function in mothers because infants have benefited from delay of the next birth. Maximal night waking can be conjectured to overlap with the greatest benefits of contraceptive suckling."

BREASTFEEDING
Research shows how breastfeeding can help ease the pain of arthritis
A new study has revealed that women who choose to breastfeed their children are half as likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than those who don't. Arthritis, which causes pain and swelling in the joints, is twice as common in women than men, and its occurrence in women increases steadily up to their mid forties.

The research, published in the journal of Rheumatology, studied more than 7,000 women, and found that the women who chose to breastfeed, especially for lengthy periods of time, were around half as likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis.

Expert Speaks Up about the Beer Drinking Mother Arrested for Breastfeeding
“Being illegal or not and getting arrested or not is not the main concern here!” Anderson exclaims “This event simply triggers the obvious need for more education on how breastfeeding will fit into one’s lifestyle, including the intake of alcohol” she goes on to say “but mothers need to be aware of how much they are drinking and time their feeds accordingly.”

Breast milk is made from blood and therefore alcohol is excreted into breastmilk as it is into the blood stream. The amount of alcohol in the blood is the amount of alcohol in a mothers milk. Alcohol will be in the breastmilk 30-60 minutes after starting drinking. As the breastmilk is filtered constantly it is excreted from the milk. As a general rule, it takes 2 hours for an average woman to metabolise the alcohol from 1 standard drink and therefore 4 hours for 2 and so on. Alcohol is not stored in the milk just as it doesn’t remain in the blood.

STUDY: Proof that antidepressants breastfeeding can mix [in a positive way!]
Dr Grzeskowiak says the health benefits of continued breastfeeding greatly outweigh any perceived risk to the baby from antidepressant medication.
"This is a really important message because we know that breastfeeding has immense benefits for the child and the mum herself, including a degree of protection against post-natal depression," he says.
