One of my favorite reads last year was Sarah Buckley's "Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering". It totally brought together so many bits and pieces that I have learned over this 12 year journey of being pregnant five times, birthing four times, and mothering our four growing sweet peas.

This quote is one of my favorites, and encompasses so much of what I love about being a mother and the joy go being able to breastfeed our children.  I hope you enjoy it, too!

Breastmilk is the ultimate superfood.  It has the potential to change in composition from one feeding to the next.  Each mother makes just what her baby needs for that time of day, for that feeding.  As described by Dr. Katie Hinde, it is more unique than a fingerprint, more unique than a snowflake.

Whether you fed your baby drops, ounces, or if you continue to breastfeed today: way to go, mama!! You gave, or are giving, your baby something that no one else could - that is simply amazing.

What is one breastmilk fact that stands out in your mind?

In honor of Armed Forces Day which was observed on May 17th, we wanted to feature the folks who serve or have served in our nation’s military. These images capture family time for the Real American Idols: people willing to put their live on the line to protect our Constitution and our freedoms, and the spouses and children who love them and live life without them while they are out on duty.  Check out more military family photos over on Sweet Pea Families.

The hospital PICU staff credited the fact that Night Owl received breastmilk through his feeding tube as the "thing" that made a difference in his recovery.  He we are, almost ready to go home - setting up to nurse him again now that he is strong enough.

Do you have any tricks or tips to share with mamas who are new to breastfeeding?

#CAM2014 Tip: This parenting practice can be especially beneficial to cesarean families to encourage bonding while you heal from your birth and revel in the miracle of life.

Wordless Wednesday: Breastfeeding

Posted on April 10, 2014 at 7:25 AM Comments comments (0)
This week's theme for Wordless Wednesday was breastfeeding in the immediate postpartum period.  Whether you birthed vaginally or via cesarean, it is possible for mothers to breastfeed.

Our first series is of a mama feeding in the recovery room after a cesarean, and a day later, still swollen from the drugs used for the induction and the cesarean.  She went on to have a great breastfeeding relationship with this Sweet Pea, and was our student for her VBAC baby in 2013.

The second set of pictures are from our births.  I hadn't thought about it until after seeing our student's comments about her third picture...I was definitely more swollen after Charger's birth than any of the others because I got lots of IV fluids between the penicillin (I was positive for GBS Strep) and the Pitocin over our two days in the hospital.

Interesting to note which babies I nursed skin-to-skin and which ones were handed to me as little burritos...now that I know better we talk about immediate skin-to-skin in the postpartum period to help get breastfeeding off to a good start.

Wordless Wednesday: Lucky Charms

Posted on March 27, 2014 at 9:15 PM Comments comments (50)
This blog post is a little late...with Spring cleaning, a treasured guest, and recovery from all the activity, here it is - finally!!

I set this theme with the idea of blending St. Patrick's Day with breastfeeding.  What do we need if we have a twiddler...a Lucky Charm to keep the fingers busy instead of driving you up a wall!!

If you haven't had a twiddler, consider yourself blessed!  I didn't have one until Otter came along.  She likes to keep her free hand occupied by twiddling...you guessed it...the nipple she isn't nursing from.  It is enough to drive me crazy!

Here are some of the things we have used, as well as some images of things that might work to distract your Sweet Pea by keeping their free hand occupied...goodness only knows that you may need "something" in the near future...there are no guarantees.  You can see that even though I was wearing my trusty Chewbeads in the picture (above), it made no difference that day!

(You can find almost everything at Modern Mommy Boutique - the only exception are the items from Maan Creations)

Enjoy these images, and be sure to check out this month's Babywearing Theme: A Kiss for Luck over on our Sweet Pea Families blog.  I will be announcing the March submission contest winners tomorrow!
