One of my favorite reads last year was Sarah Buckley's "Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering". It totally brought together so many bits and pieces that I have learned over this 12 year journey of being pregnant five times, birthing four times, and mothering our four growing sweet peas. This quote is one of my favorites, and encompasses so much of what I love about being a mother and the joy go being able to breastfeed our children. I hope you enjoy it, too! Each mother makes just what her baby needs for that time of day, for that feeding. As described by Dr. Katie Hinde, it is more unique than a fingerprint, more unique than a snowflake. Whether you fed your baby drops, ounces, or if you continue to breastfeed today: way to go, mama!! You gave, or are giving, your baby something that no one else could - that is simply amazing. What is one breastmilk fact that stands out in your mind? Read more about breastmilk... In honor of Armed Forces Day which was observed on May 17th, we wanted to feature the folks who serve or have served in our nation’s military. These images capture family time for the Real American Idols: people willing to put their live on the line to protect our Constitution and our freedoms, and the spouses and children who love them and live life without them while they are out on duty. Here is this month's breastfeeding edition of #wordlesswednesday - check out all the different ways and places that Sweet Peas are being breastfed! Be sure to check out our "May Days" theme on our SPFamilies blog :) Otter is a breastfed toddler - even princesses need a mama break! Nursing as she waits for Daddy to run the Boston Marathon Nursing Puma as a three-month old The hospital PICU staff credited the fact that Night Owl received breastmilk through his feeding tube as the "thing" that made a difference in his recovery. He we are, almost ready to go home - setting up to nurse him again now that he is strong enough. Do you have any tricks or tips to share with mamas who are new to breastfeeding? Wordless Wednesday: Lucky Charms

This blog post is a little late...with Spring cleaning, a treasured guest, and recovery from all the activity, here it is - finally!! I set this theme with the idea of blending St. Patrick's Day with breastfeeding. What do we need if we have a twiddler...a Lucky Charm to keep the fingers busy instead of driving you up a wall!! If you haven't had a twiddler, consider yourself blessed! I didn't have one until Otter came along. She likes to keep her free hand occupied by twiddling...you guessed it...the nipple she isn't nursing from. It is enough to drive me crazy! Here are some of the things we have used, as well as some images of things that might work to distract your Sweet Pea by keeping their free hand occupied...goodness only knows that you may need "something" in the near future...there are no guarantees. You can see that even though I was wearing my trusty Chewbeads in the picture (above), it made no difference that day! Enjoy these images, and be sure to check out this month's Babywearing Theme: A Kiss for Luck over on our Sweet Pea Families blog. I will be announcing the March submission contest winners tomorrow! Jeyllystones ~ texture: Chewbeads ~ texture: Bunnies By The Bay makes these sweet lovies ~ texture and something to hold: These are by Little Yellow Chick~ texture, loops and crinkle sounds: And these from Maison Chic ~ texture and loops (also teething textures for use while not nursing!): Also at Modern Mommy - these are by Bearington Bear Company ~ texture: From Maan Creations ~ a little texture and a little sound: Just a little fun when your Sweet Pea is older ~ they can twiddle their own beads ;) What is your breastfeeding "Lucky Charm"? Please leave us a comment - it will be moderated and posted. Disclaimer:
