Sun Safety for Sweet Pea
Posted on July 4, 2014 at 1:09 PM |
![]() |
First, let’s cover why it is recommended that
infants under six months of age avoid sunscreen altogether. I was asked recently why babies are supposed to
avoid sunscreen. Although I have “known” this since our first Sweet Pea,
I had never given much thought as to why that would be necessary, other than to
avoid putting anything remotely chemical or toxic on their super-sweet and
sensitive baby skin. Anything applied to
the skin goes directly into the bloodstream, so my first thought was because a
baby's skin is so thin that transfer happens much more quickly. My other thought was that you wouldn't want
your baby exposed to the ingredients sunscreens. I did some research, and
here is a “scientific” answer:
The article
goes on to make recommendations about how to protect your Sweet Pea without
sunscreen. Read the whole consumer guide HERE.
This infographic sums up the information: FDA
graphic by Michael J. Ermarth Note on the infographic: exclusively breastfed ("EBF") infants *do not* need a bottle for hydration... here is the pertinent info from KellyMom.com:
So if you are going to avoid sunscreens due to your Sweet Pea’s
age, here is our favorite brand in
the SPF-protective clothing market. Click HERE to see the adorable design and bright fabrics that
Solumbra by Sun Precautions offers to protect your Sweet Pea's delicate skin.
Our sons and daughters lived in the Toddler Swimsuit for years. One suit typically
lasted through 2-3 kiddos. Well worth the price, and then some! If your Sweet Pea is old enough to use
sunscreen, I would direct you to this website to help you find the safest
sunscreens for your Sweet Pea's sensitive skin. If you have known me
long, you know I often reference the Environmental Working Group. They
have a fantastic resource for sunscreens. Click HERE to see how your sunscreen measures up.
If you haven't purchased a product yet, reference their list of
top sunscreens before you do your shopping. Another sun safety tip: If you are going to be out in the sun, avoid
direct sunlight between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm when the suns rays are the
brightest. Invest in a travel canopy
that you can assemble and still permits you to enjoy the outdoors without
exposing skin to the sun’s rays. Whether it’s a long holiday weekend or a day in
the sun, take care to protect you and your Sweet Pea by staying hydrated,
staying shaded, and choosing the safest products for your family. What is your favorite sun-safety tip? Please leave us a comment - it will be moderated and
posted. Disclaimer: It is not intended nor implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice. Inside Look: Estella Grace
Posted on June 20, 2014 at 9:57 AM |
![]() |
One
of the treasures I brought home for the kiddos from the amazing Club MomMe
Spring Family Fest was a homemade, hand-crafted lotion bar from the Estella Grace
display. I got to visit with Amy’s
assistant, Jenelle, at the event; Amy was chatting with another customer when I stopped by. Amy was kind enough to do a
virtual interview with me and share these beautiful images of her products, all
of them hand-crafted and made with love in the USA. SPB readers will want to consider using her handmade lotion bars as part of, "avoiding harmful substances" during pregnancy, or maybe the aromatherapy candles for use during relaxation practice, labor, or the postpartum period to add a little lift to your days. If you are lucky enough to have a little girl in your life, the mommy-daughter items are definitely in your future!! We look forward to filling our home with more Estella Grace items now that I don't have to worry about trying to bring them all home in one carry-on bag :) About Amy: Amy Passantino is the founder of Estella Grace.
She is an interior designer, food blogger, and author. Amy was born and raised
in Wayne, New Jersey and received her Bachelor Degree in interior design back
in 2002. She went on to work for renowned firms specializing in high-end
residential design, which eventually led her to work on Brad Pitt’s ‘Make it
Right’ Project in New Orleans. She helped thousands of people across
the country with their homes while managing a national program, Color Makeover, for
Benjamin Moore. She worked closely with consumers and spoke at events for House
Beautiful Magazine. In 2012, she opened AEP Interior Design in Los Angeles
where she designed coastal homes and used her knowledge of feng shui and color
psychology to re-design healthcare facilities. Her biggest venture yet is
Estella Grace - a vintage inspired brand that will help people get back to the
heart of the home through an American Pie experience. SPB:
How did you get started with handmade candle and lotion bar crafting? AP: I began developing this vintage-inspired brand about 2 years
ago. I knew exactly the look, the smell, and how I wanted my products to make
people feel. Originally I was just going to buy candles from local craft people and sell them, until one day I was talking to a friend of mine
about buying some candles as gift. She turned to me and said "Why don't
you just make them yourself? " I had never thought about that
before. From there I began researching candle recipes and developing my
technique. Candle making is definitely not for everyone, but for me, it
was a way to create some of my first products. Once I mastered the
candles, I moved on to my homemade lotion bars. From my
experience in working with candles I was able to know what
scents would be perfect for my lotion bars. SPB:
What motivated you to start Estella Grace? AP: I was raised in a generation where everything was sold in a
store without any real understanding of where it came from. I remember the
first time I made homemade preserves. I couldn’t believe how easy it was and
how much better it tasted. I felt like I had been missing out on fresh foods
for most of my life. My passion for homemaking grew from there. I began making
my own apple butter, breads, and pies. Every time I got in the kitchen it was a
new challenge on what I could create from scratch and I eventually began
blogging and tailoring the recipes toward beginner cooks like myself. I believe
there is something special about the act of sharing recipes and teaching that
makes a home special. When I came up with the name Estella Grace I pictured
this 1940's house wife as someone who would take us back in time to a
simpler life. Estella means Star. She is ‘The Star of Grace’ empowering women
and reminding us of our homemaking roots. She will teach us how to make things
from scratch and have a new appreciation for items which are sometimes taken
for granted. My hope is to inspire a new generation to focus on creating a
home with meaning and purpose. SPB: Where do you draw your inspiration for
the candle fragrances and the lotions? AP: Part of the Estella Grace experience is nostalgia and having those
special scents that take you back in time. I drew inspiration for my fragrance
candles and lotion bars with scents from my childhood like blueberry
pie and banana bread. I also love the simplicity of the South and
the down home scents that are yummy and delicious! Some of my recent
favorites are peaches n' cream and strawberry lemonade. In addition to my
fragrance candles I have created an Aromatherapy candle line which
uses essential oils. Depending on the properties of the oils they can either
relax you after a stressful day (Rosemary Lavender) or revive you if you have
been feeling run down and need a boost of energy (Peppermint Fir.) They are a
different type of candle that makes you feel good and all of the candles
are 100% soy. SPB: What spurred
the expansion into mommy-daughter items? AP: Every girl remembers their time in the kitchen with their
mother. That is why I created the 'Mommy and Me Aprons.' Little girls
love to be like their mother and these aprons will make them feel extra
special! That is what it is all about, being in the kitchen and sharing
memories. I want to continue creating mother-daughter products because they are
the younger generation and it's important for them to learn
and be apart of this teaching brand. SPB: I understand
you are expanding into a clothing line - what is the inspiration for the
clothing design? Will those items also be handmade? AP: I just designed my first Estella Grace dress. There will be 4
dress lines in total, each designed after an iconic woman from the 1940s-1950s.
The next step will be to create a line of organic fabrics perfect
for homemaking. All of my products will be handmade in the USA.
I think a consumer can feel the difference between an item that is
handmade versus factory-made, and I intend to keep that human contact so my
products are of the highest quality and always made with love. SPB: Do you have a favorite item in your shop?
Which one is it, and why? AP: All of my products are
my favorite. I envisioned each and every one of them before it was created and
there is something so special about that process when you finally see it come
to life. From the material selection, to the construction, and the packaging, I
put my heart and soul into the final product you see. They all have a story to
tell and I love that! SPB: What sets your shop apart from other Etsy
shops? AP:I love all Etsy shops
and what they stand for. There is something to be said for artists who are
creating and inspiring people with their products. All of Estella Grace
products are handmade in the USA and are made of the highest quality
materials. I want customers to have that trust in my brand knowing we will
always deliver on that promise. SPB: Is there anything else you would like to
share with our readers? AP: I
look at Estella Grace as not just a brand, but a movement that will shift
you into a mindset of quality versus quantity. I would like to get back to
a community-oriented lifestyle offering baking, sewing, and gardening
classes in our first country store. We can't wait to finally open the doors and
give people the opportunity to have the Estella Grace experience. Organic fabrics sewn into beautiful garments...a community-based vision...this is a woman with an eye to the future. We wish Amy and her team all the best as they work to bring this vision and store experience to fruition. Estella Grace is an amazing place to shop on-line or at Los Angeles events if you are lucky enough to live in the area and shop directly from Amy. We expect it will soon be "the place" to visit and grow when she opens her country store. Many blessings to you, Amy! How to connect with Amy and the Estella Grace experience: Twitter

Special Feature: Club MomMe Spring Family Fest

Club Mom-Me Spring Family Fest: Saturday, June 7, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency Resort & Spa Huntington Beach Club MomMe is a social, educational and wellness community for moms and moms-to-be. They provide a place for women to meet each other, make friends, learn about pregnancy and motherhood, and share unique experiences together. All attendees at each event receive a gift bag and a chance to win great giveaways like strollers, car seats, gear and more!
SPB is very excited to announce that we will be at the Club MomMe OC Spring Fest event. In case you cannot attend in person, you can follow us on Twitter for live-tweets from the event, see views from the inside the event on Instagram, and we will be sharing presenter notes in future blog posts. Here is our virtual interview with Aubrye Foote, Vice President of Club MomMe Orange County, with your inside scoop on the event coming up this Saturday, June 7, 2014. SPB: What's new at the Spring Family Fest? AF: This year we've added our Daddy Lounge with fun activities, a Style Lounge where you can see and shop for different clothing, bags, etc. and added some interactive areas for the kids. Spring Fest truly is an event where you can learn about parenthood, explore products & gear, sample goodies during the event and in the *huge* gift bags you'll take home, and connect with not only experts but other families as well. SPB: Tell me more about the inspiration for the Daddy Lounge. It sounds amazing - are MomMe's and Babies welcome, too? AF: We wanted our Family Fests to be something every member of the family could enjoy and what better way for Dad to have a good time then to set him up with a fantastic microbrew (Beach City Brewery) and a taco bar! Of course MomMes and Babies are welcome to enjoy the Daddy Lounge. Besides, we're having Micro Kickboard races and diaper changing races that MomMes will just LOVE to watch and a craft where littles can decorate a tumbler for Daddy for Father's Day from Daddy & Company. SPB: What can a family expect to find, see and learn about? AF: At Spring Fest, families can listen to various speakers and panels such as Dr. Harvey Karp, Natural Parenting Panel, Entrepreneurship for Parents Panel, Healthy Child Healthy World's Understanding Labels workshop, Daddy Panel, and the Hot Baby & Toddler Products session. They'll be able to see and shop at exhibitors ranging from baby/toddler products & gear, clothing, skincare, food and more. We have an Activity Zone with lots of amazing activities for the little ones, a Pamper Lounge where you can enjoy a manicure, a hand massage and juice bar, a Daddy Lounge by Daddy & Company with a microbrew and races with prizes, a Style Lounge featuring gorgeous clothing & bags and last but not least the Lansinoh Lactation Lounge where MomMes can go to nurse or break away to feed & change their babies. SPB: How can they get the most out of the event? Are there other breakout sessions besides the main speakers? AF: There's the main speakers/panels and as a part of each session parents get the opportunity to ask whatever questions they have! I encourage them to do so because these speakers are fabulous! In addition to those sessions, I would recommend that families take advantage of having the ability to see and test new products on the market, learn about what's available to them, visit with the local resources to make parenthood easier and even do some shopping to take these great products home. Not only that, but MomMes ... take some time in the Pamper Lounge and get a manicure or hand massage while Daddy and the little one are off kicking a soccer ball. SPB: Do you have any survival tips to share for families attending with toddlers and/or more mobile children? AF: The great part about Spring Fest is that we have 4 different craft areas, musicians that are performing for the kids, Super Soccer Stars soccer area, a face painter, balloon artist and Urban Sitters will be there to keep an eye on the little ones should MomMe and Daddy need some help. We wanted parents to be able to enjoy the event, but also have the kids enjoy it as well. That's why we set up so many activities in our Activity Zone to keep those "active" ones happy. They may not even want to leave!! SPB: What are the ticketing levels? Which do you feel is the best value? AF: The levels that are still available are:
Each ticket level receives an amazing amount of "swag" that they get to take home. The VIP level ticket has a gift bag worth over $500 and the Celeb ticket has almost $1,000 worth of items. With that, I'd have to say the Celeb ticket is the best value, but you can't go wrong with any of them! SPB: Long term, what is your vision for the Family Fest events? AF: Our biggest passion in what we do is being able to bring resources to parents that they may not have access to on their own. At Family Fest we are able to bring all of that together in one location. Currently we have our Spring Fest in Orange County and Fall Fest is Los Angeles, but our long term vision for our Family Fests is to be able to expand them into other areas in the US so that we can provide these fantastic speakers and brands to an even greater number of families. Thank you, Aubrye, for giving our readers the inside scoop on the event! To learn more about the speakers and panels, please visit the event website HERE http://clubmommeevents.com/. Ticket Giveaway Contest: If you would like to win the Family Ticket which includes 2 Adults and one gift bag with a ton of product & goodies, please leave a comment below and tell me which is your *must see* session. I will choose a winner on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at noon. The winner will be selected by Random.org by assigning each comment a number in order of receipt and letting the Random Number Generator choose a winning number. Please be sure to leave me your email address in the comment so that the Media MomMe can email you your Family Ticket. Event Sessions: Dr. Harvey Karp Author of “The Happiest Baby on the Block" & "The Happiest Toddler on the Block” Want a career and balance parenthood? Looking to be a “mompreneur”? With emerging trends in business, innovative new technology, social media, and the shifting cultural expectations about careers and work/life balance, presents the perfect opportunity for a new generation of entrepreneurs or “mompreneurs”. There is no roadmap for establishing a business or career that you’re passionate about AND supports motherhood. You often have to create it yourself, which can be a daunting task. Join us to be inspired, motivated and moved to become a Mompreneur yourself, and learn how our panelists started on their journey to becoming Mompreneurs! With Jill Ettinger & Alexandra Spunt Healthy Child Healthy World is hosting its second annual Educational Workshop at Spring Fest, “Understanding Labels,” to help the public navigate this increasingly ambiguous landscape. The event will welcome top experts and personalities in the consumer products and environmental health space to address label confusion and coach attendees on how to effectively read labels, what “red flags” to watch for, ingredients to question, and how to be a smarter, more conscious shopper. Want information and tips on Natural Parenting? consciously. While families may define it differently, there are several principles that are widely agreed to be part of this lifestyle. These are ideals that natural parents tend to hold … even if we don’t always live up to all of them.
