Mommy Con LA Wrap-Up
Posted on October 10, 2013 at 3:44 PM |
The Mommy Con Babywearing World Record Event was on Sunday, October 8, 2013 at the LA Convention Center West Hall. Cassandra and I got to attend as media, and we were able to cover lots of aspects of the whole Mommy Con experience. Here are links to all the things we saw and experienced that day: The day started off with the Babywearing World Record - click HERE to see pictures from that event. Then we went into the convention hall. Our next treat was the eye candy of all the beautiful new carriers on the scene for the fall. Click HERE for the Babywearing Fashion Show. Starting at noon, we were treated to seminar talks by Natural Parenting Experts. Program Notes are included in "quotes". Click HERE for our notes from Dr. Robert Sears, Dad to 3, pediatrician and author. "Dr. Bob takes a unique approach to pediatrics by providing a combination of alternative and traditional medical care. He is the author of The Vaccine Book: Making the Right Decision for Your Child." Click HERE for our notes from the Moby-sponsored appearance of Jessica Martin-Weber, Mother of 6 and blogger at The Leaky Boob. "Don't tell this mom of six to cover up while nursing. She is passionate, motivated and dedicated to helping mothers find the strength and courage to breastfeed in an unsupportive society." Click HERE for our notes from the Nuroo-sponsored appearance of January Harshe, Mother of 5 and blogger at Birth Without Fear. "From c-sections to unassited home births, the lovely January of "Mrs. Birth Without Fear" joins us at all our 2013 events as an inspiring speaker and storyteller." Click HERE for our notes from the Milkin' Cookies-sponsored appearance of Abby Theuring, Mom & Blogger at The Badass Breastfeeder. "A social worker turned blogger turned awe-inspiring mother who isn't afraid to be a Badass Breastfeeder." Between all the happenings on stage, we got to wander through the convention all and experience what was promised: first looks, new product debuts and lots to touch, feel and try from industry-leading manufactures. Click HERE for a tour of the convention hall floor. Our event reviews Krystyna: This event definitely lived up to the expectation of a "Con" event - product debuts, sneak peaks at "upcoming releases", a line-up of "celebrity" speakers...it was well done. I don't know what the value of the break-out sessions is to attendees, so I can't compare that to the event I attended in Phoenix as a vendor. There, the breakout sessions tried to stagger with the presenters so that mamas could take in as much info as possible. The concerns our students expressed in Phoenix were addressed: the event lived up to the hype, and there were plenty of vendors to buy the latest and greatest baby gear from, and there were coupon codes for the big items that won't fit in the basket of your stroller or your diaper bag. I think it is important for attendees to know that there is a big giveaway at the end. There are two ways to win...one is to have your name drawn at random. All attendees are entered into the drawings, and you must be present to win in order to claim your prize. The second way is by random selection - again you must be present to win. When there is a specific prize that is best suited for a family with children of a specific age, then the MC asks qualifying questions until there is one family standing. Not everyone was happy with these arrangements. Maybe stating the rules again before the big giveaway begins, with a clear statement of the parameters, would help facilitate a jovial end to a long day. It is a VERY long day with an older nursling, so if you are going to go enjoy the whole MommyCon experience, I would definitely arrange for someone to come pick up your nursling at some point throughout the day so you can hear all the presenters and hang in there to the last giveaways, including the goody bags that are held to the very end of the day (I think to motivate you to stick it out.) Overall, I believe the event is well worth the ticket price, especially if you go into the day with the understanding that the final giveaway is a bonus and not a sure thing. The goody bags are pretty sweet, and it sounds like there is more "swag" in the bags as the event grows. Cassandra: Stay tuned - hers is on the way :) |
