Going Above and Beyond Fear

This is one of my favorite birth mantras.  It is so easy to go to the “what ifs” and the “I don’t know” and “I’m afraid of”.  We could literally drive ourselves into a frozen panic if we go down those paths. 
 
With each of my births, my fears were different.  I focused on these words to remind myself of all the positives we did have as we approached our due date, and all the proactive things we had done to set ourselves up for our best possible birth.
 
Here are some of the things that are in your control that can help you get to what you want:
 
  1. Exercise to build up your strength (especially the muscle groups used in labor) and stamina.
  2. Whole food nutrition to serve as optimal building blocks for a Healthy Mom and Healthy Baby.
  3. A repertoire of labor positions to manage different sensations and stages of labor.
  4. A “toolbox” of comfort measures to manage different sensations and stages of labor.
  5. Positive communication skills to ensure an open line of communication with your partner, your care team, and in your birth space.
 
So while yes, anyone who cares about the birth of their baby is going to have some fears, it is important to look above and beyond them to all the things you can and will do to achieve what you want: a Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby outcome.
 
A good childbirth preparation course will cover at least the five basics outlined above.  Of course, Bradley Method® classes are our favorite, and you will learn those things and more over our twelve-week series.

I love your Quote. That will make all the difference for so many women. Our culture has an "Ain't it Awful" attitude about Childbirth. Not only that but I find many women try to have the worst birth in a conversation as though it is a badge of honor to have suffered the most! Keep up the good work of changing our world, Sweet Pea!
